Artist Statement

Having spent my entire career in the design field I now have the good fortune of being an artist at the Foundry Art Centre. My current work consists of watercolor studies of flowers, fruit, vegetables and other objects from nature. I prefer to paint directly from the object rather than from photographs. I enjoy the challenge of the tangible object because it is physically present and you can hold and examine it unlike a photo. When asked who has inspired or influenced me one name immediately comes to mind - Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the 19th century Scottish architect and designer. Mackintosh too, spent a majority of his life in the design field, only to spend his later years perfecting his watercolors. I believe some of his finest works are his botanical studies and paintings. |
